Liberal, liberal you are so liberal

The “liberal” label is cast upon all who oppose the President’s plan of making the rich richer and the poor poorer. Kathleen Harris, in announcing her intention to run for Senate with the hope of unseating Senator Nelson, calls the senator “liberal.” During the 2004 election, Senator Kerry was called the most “liberal” senator.Liberal is such an ugly name now. It seems to mean weak, or stuck in the same groove. The feeble Democratic Party remains silent. Here is a definition of the word “liberal” from one dictionary:
Liberal: Favorable to progress or reform as in political or religious affairs, designating or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform. Pertaining to, based on or having views or policies advocating individual freedom of action and _expression …..free from prejudice or bigotry tolerant...free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas values: open-minded.Another dictionary defines Liberal as:Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded. Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism. A person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties.Other words that are similar in meaning are: broad-minded; generous; progressive; and, reformist. After contemplating these definitions, I ponder: what is wrong with being liberal? Many great policies have come from “liberal” policy makers, such as social security, and medical and maternity leave.
Be proud to be liberal because the opposite seems stagnant.
Conservative: disposed to preserve existing condition, institutions or to restore traditional ones and to limit change, unprogressive.
